The Mental Health of New Fathers: It matters to everyone

Becoming a parent is a significant transition and a vulnerable moment for most of us. We can only hope that the experience is more joyful than stressful, knowing that all thoughts and emotions are possible. Up to 10% of fathers experience depression during this time, which can have an impact on fatherhood, co-parenting and child development. This presentation will describe the common men's mental health issues during the perinatal period and its impact on father involvement.

Dr. Andrew Howlett is a psychiatrist and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. He is the founder of a Fathers' Mental Health service in Toronto that provides clinical care to expectant and new fathers. His research has also explored psychotherapeutic interventions for new parents.
